Bets Dressed - Week 9 - Thursday Night Football Uniform Matchup and Fantasy Plays
Welcome to Week 9 and another Thursday edition of the Bets Dressed newsletter. Hard to believe we'll be halfway through the regular season once this week is over. But what's even more hard to believe is that the cities of Philadelphia and Houston are participating not only in Thursday Night Football but also in Game 5 of the World Series.
Ladies and gentlemen, the World Series Bowl!
A quick note on methodology.
As always, I’m analyzing every NFL uniform matchup and picking a winner against the spread based on who dresses best. And just because a team’s wardrobe is ranked higher in the Power Rankings doesn’t mean that it will automatically win the uniform matchup. It’s what you wear in the instant matchup that counts.
And don’t forget the Triple Mismatch Club wrinkle. I’m making three unit plays whenever the best dressed team in the matchup is a member of the Club (different colored helmet, jersey, and pants). And nine unit plays if both members of the week’s best matchup are members.
Week 8 Recap.
Before we dive into Thursday Night Football and Week 9 Fantasy Plays, let’s revisit Week 8:
10-5. I said we were going to blow this thing wide open last week, and that is what we did. Best performance so far. Let's keep the good times rolling.
Thursday Night Football Uniform Matchup.
The battle red helmets have arrived. The Texans are on the shortlist of teams most in need of a uniform redesign. So I commend them for trying something different. My biggest gripe is that I wish the red helmet was paired with the blue or white jersey.* A bit of contrast goes a long way. Speaking of contrast, I was rooting for green pants from the Eagles.** The Eagles icy whites are not among the league's best, but I'll take anything other than black pants for Philadelphia. This is a close call, but the Eagles fantastic helmet logo carries the day for the Birds.
The Eagles cannot be stopped. AJ Brown reminded the world that he was one of the best offseason additions of the year. And Jalen Hurts continues to impress. But not enough people are giving credit to Jonathan Gannon and his ferocious defense. Philadelphia is tied for the league lead in fewest yards allowed. And as luck would have it, they're squaring off against a Houston team that has gained the second fewest yards. That 14-point line is starting to make sense. It's a lot of points, but I won't complain about being on the Eagles side until they let us down.
*Red helmet, white jersey, and blue pants would look especially sharp (and patriotic).
**Green and Red. The holiday season is officially upon us.
The Pick: Eagles -14 (-105)
Club SDR - Week 9 Fantasy Plays.
We're coming off a down week for the Single Digit Revolution. DeVonta Smith and Zay Jones left us wanting more. Thankfully, Marcus Mariota performed as expected and kept us from an o-fer. 12-11 on the year. Bounce back incoming.
Tua Tagovailoa - Over 266.5 Passing Yards (-110)
In games where Tua has started and finished, he's averaging 314 passing yards and 9.2 yards per attempt. The Bears defense has faced an average of 31 pass attempts per game and has given up the 7th most passing yards in the NFL. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are going to want to feast on the Bears pass defense, and I think Tua is ready to oblige them.
Dalvin Cook - Over 99.5 Rushing and Receiving Yards (-110)
The Vikings are off to the races with a 6-1 start, and Dalvin Cook has been a major reason why. In their six wins this season, Cook is averaging 91 rushing yards and 15 receiving yards per game. And I expect these trends to continue against the Commanders (both in wins and total yards for Cook).
Gerald Everett - Over 42.5 Receiving Yards (-110)
Gerald Everett has quietly had a nice year for the Chargers. He's cleared the number in four of seven games this season. And Everett has drawn a fantastic matchup agains the Falcons, who are giving up 69 receiving yards per game to opposing tight ends (third most in the NFL).

Coming Attractions.
Bets Dressed Week 8 coverage continues this Sunday with a breakdown of the full slate (plus Monday Night Football).
Look for the Sunday issue to hit your inbox prior to the early window kickoff. As I’ve noted previously, we live in a world without a uniform scheduling czar, so it’s sometimes a chore finding out a team’s wardrobe ahead of time. In instances where it’s not 100% clear, I’ll make a best guess and update the issue later.
