Bets Dressed - Week 7 - Thursday Night Football Uniform Matchup and Fantasy Plays

Week 7 has arrived. We've reached the back half of October, and we're back for another Thursday Night Football edition of the Bets Dressed newsletter. Thursday nights have been our bread and butter. 5-1 on the year and 5-0 since the switch to streaming on Amazon Prime. Cheers to you, Mr. Bezos.

As red hot as we've been on Thursday nights, the quality of play has been ice cold. And Saints-Cardinals isn't exactly the marquee matchup of the week. Especially in the uniform department. We're saving the worst for first for the second week in a row. Loser can count their season all but over. Ladies and gentlemen, the Lost in the Desert Bowl!

A quick note on methodology.

As always, I’m analyzing every NFL uniform matchup and picking a winner against the spread based on who dresses best. And just because a team’s wardrobe is ranked higher in the Power Rankings doesn’t mean that it will automatically win the uniform matchup. It’s what you wear in the instant matchup that counts.

And don’t forget the Triple Mismatch Club wrinkle. I’m making three unit plays whenever the best dressed team in the matchup is a member of the Club (different colored helmet, jersey, and pants). And nine unit plays if both members of the week’s best matchup are members.

Week 6 Recap.

Before we get to Thursday Night Football and Week 7 Fantasy Plays, let’s revisit Week 6:

8-6.* Finally broke through the .500 threshold. Let's keep the positive momentum rolling this week.

*Of all the beats last week, nothing was worse than the 49ers-Falcons over (44.5). 42 points at the 8:40 mark of the third quarter. And then poof. Nothing for the remaining 23 minutes and 40 seconds of the game. Puke.

Thursday Night Football Uniform Matchup (and Worst NFL Uniform Matchup of Week 7)..

This is a weird uniform week. A lot of matchups feature a good uniform squaring off against a bad uniform, which brings down the overall quality of the uniform slate and can sometimes make it challenging to pick a best and worst matchup of the week. But Saints-Cardinals bailed me out of a tough decision. And the choice for worst of the week is quite clear. The Cardinals have the second worst wardrobe in the league, and the blackbird outfit is as unnecessary as it gets.* The Saints aversion to their excellent gold pants will never make sense to me, and the white unitard leaves a lot to be desired. It's especially frustrating when NFL teams roll out the equivalent of white practice pants. Throw some stripes on there or something. I shouldn't be able to stick your logo on a pair of football pants from Dick's Sporting Goods and pass them off as game worn. This one is the worst of the week, and it's not particularly close.

It's been a disappointing start for the Saints and Cardinals. Both teams entered the season with playoff aspirations. It's hard to not give up on each already, but neither plays in a division with a leader above .500. The winner of this one (assuming no tie) will be at 3-4 and clinging to postseason hope. The loser? Not so much. With a combined average of 42.5 points per game, the under is very much in play.

While we're rooting for the under in this one, I'd be remiss to not mention the Saints and their ongoing bird gauntlet. Two legs down (Falcons Part I and Seahawks) and four legs to go (Cardinals, Ravens, Falcons Part II, and Eagles). In fact, the only games the Saints have won this season have been against bird mascot opponents. If the Saints can pull it off tonight, we're halfway home.

*Glass half full: the all-black look makes it somewhat harder to notice the dreadful piping, striping, and paneling of the Cardinals Panelist Era template.

The Pick: Under 44 (-110)

Club SDR - Week 7 Fantasy Plays.

Nice bounce back week for the Single Digit Revolution. The running backs delivered. Leonard Fournette by a little and Ken Walker by a lot. Drake London came up just short but how can you be mad at any Atlanta Falcon after that win in those outfits? 9-8 on the year in player props. Let's keep the positive trend going.

Kyler Murray - Over 35.5 Passing Attempts (+100)

Let's get an iron in the fire for Thursday Night Football. Kyler Murray has had a down year, but he's still a viable fantasy starter. And now's a good time to buy low right before he gets DeAndre Hopkins back from suspension. One thing you can always count on with Kyler and Kliff: they're going to sling it. A lot. Kyler has cleared the number in four of six games this season (comfortably so in three). And he was off by low single digits in the two games he failed to do so. I like Murray to take care of business here and have a nice game overall.

Amari Cooper - Over 53.5 Receiving Yards (-115)

Amari Cooper is very quietly having a nice season as the WR1 for the Browns. On pace for 88 catches, 986 yards, and 11 touchdowns, Cooper is accounting for 27% of his team's receiving yards. And he draws a favorable matchup against the Ravens this week. Baltimore is giving up the 4th most passing yards in the NFL (268 yards per game). If that trend stays the same and Cooper's average share holds, he should clear the number with ease.

Daniel Jones - Over 195.5 Passing Yards (-115)

The Jaguars have given up the 8th most passing yards in the NFL (245 yards per game) but the 5th fewest rushing yards. I expect the Jacksonville defense to key in on Saquon Barkley and force Daniel Jones to throw the football. And while Jones has only cleared the number twice this year, I think he's coming into his own under Brian Daboll and up to the task here.

Coming Attractions.

Bets Dressed Week 7 coverage continues this Sunday with a breakdown of the full slate (plus Monday Night Football).

Look for the Sunday issue to hit your inbox before the early window kick. As I’ve noted previously, we live in a world without a uniform scheduling czar, so it’s sometimes a chore finding out a team’s wardrobe ahead of time. In instances where it’s not 100% clear, I’ll make a best guess and update the issue later.
