Bets Dressed - Week 3 - Thursday Night Football Uniform Matchup and Fantasy Plays
Week 3. We're starting to get into the swing of things. Lots of football left but the season can quickly slip away if you land on the wrong side of .500. Which brings us to tonight's AFC North showdown between the 1-1 Steelers and 1-1 Browns. Separated by approximately 130 miles of Pennsylvania and Ohio turnpikes, the rivalry sometimes referred to as the Turnpike War is set for its 142nd iteration (including playoffs). Ladies and gentlemen, the Turnpike Bowl!
A quick note on methodology.
For the uninitiated, I’m analyzing every NFL uniform matchup and picking a winner against the spread based on who dresses best. And just because a team’s wardrobe is ranked higher in the Power Rankings doesn’t mean that it will automatically win the uniform matchup. It’s what you wear in the instant matchup that counts.
And don’t forget the Triple Mismatch Club wrinkle. I’m making three unit plays whenever the best dressed team in the matchup is a member of the Club (different colored helmet, jersey, and pants). And nine unit plays if both members of the week’s best matchup are members.
Week 2 Recap.
Before we get to Thursday Night Football and Week 3 Fantasy Plays, let’s revisit Week 2:
7-9. Again! As to whether a trend is developing, not so fast my friend. The Browns, Ravens, and Raiders served up some brutal beats. And we've got a whole lot of football left. With that said, it's time to shuffle the deck, rework the mojo, and renew our faith in the uniform gods.
Thursday Night Football Uniform Matchup.
What a beaut. This one was a strong contender for best matchup of the week. It's always a delight when the Browns* break out the orange pants, and they have the edge in this one. Possibly controversial take: the matchup itself would be better served with the Browns in white pants. Not only would it involve two members of the Triple Mismatch Club, but it would also remove the slight clash between the yellow pants of the Steelers and the orange pants of the Browns.
As for the game itself, I'm most interested in seeing how the Steelers rudimentary offensive line handles the game wrecker that is Myles Garrett. The question for this Steelers season is quickly becoming when we see Kenny Pickett start as opposed to if we see him start. But until it actually happens, we'll continue to see Mitch Trubisky under center. That's music to the ears of everyone betting on the Browns.
The Pick: Browns -4 (-115)
Club SDR - Week 3 Fantasy Plays.
For the second week in a row, the quarterback prop hit while the skill position props flopped. Message received, Universe. In this week's application of the Single Digit Revolution, it's quarterbacks only. And not just any quarterbacks. Meet the "we're not giving up on you just yet" squad:
Justin Fields - Over 35.5 Rushing Yards (-110)
There's no sugar coating it. Justin Fields has had a rough go of it to start the 2022 season. His passing slash line is especially lackluster (191/2/2/53.6% over two games). But we're not going to focus on that. In 2021, Fields averaged 5.8 rushing yards per attempt. That number is down to an abysmal 2.5 yards per attempt. However, his rush attempts per game are up significantly from last year (6 to 9.5). I'm betting that his yards per attempt regresses closer to last year's figure while the attempts stay where they've been to start the season. Plus the Bears are facing the Texans, who are giving up 163 rushing yards per game - third worst in the NFL.
Matt Ryan - Over 1.5 Passing Touchdowns (+130)
Speaking of rough goes to start the season, Matt Ryan and the Colts didn't think they'd be 0-1-1 after games against divisional doormats in Houston and Jacksonville. But here we are. As for Ryan himself, woof. One touchdown against four interceptions over the first two weeks. And now the juggernaut Chiefs are coming to town. But this the "we're not giving up on you just yet" squad for a reason, and I'm not throwing in the towel on No. 2 himself, the face of the Single Digit Revolution. Going back to 2019, Ryan has thrown multiple touchdowns in 48% of his starts. With the juice where it is and a healthy dose of "he's due", sign me up.
Baker Mayfield - Over 1.5 Passing Touchdowns (+195)
It feels like things haven't been going Baker's way for a while now. The Carolina redemption tour is off to an inauspicious 0-2 start. And the Bets Dressed pick for Comeback Player of the Year is in danger of falling out of consideration before hitting the quarter pole. But if you're going to give me essentially 2 to 1 odds on an NFL quarterback to throw two touchdown passes in the year 2022, I'm going to take it almost every time - especially when said quarterback has cleared the number in 51% of his career starts.

Coming Attractions.
Bets Dressed Week 3 coverage continues this Sunday with a breakdown of the full slate (plus Monday Night Football).
Look for the Sunday issue to hit your inbox a few hours before the early window kick. As I've noted previously, we live in a world without a uniform scheduling czar, so it’s sometimes a chore finding out a team’s wardrobe ahead of time. In instances where it’s not 100% clear, I’ll make a best guess and update the issue later.
