Bets Dressed - Week 15 - Uniform Matchups and Picks

Week 15 is off and running. The Saturday slate featured the largest comeback in NFL history, a throwback defensive grudge match, and a snow covered divisional battle ending with a walk-off field goal. In the words of Larry David: pretty, pretty, pretty good. It may be hard for the Sunday slate to live up to its Week 15 predecessors, but I have faith. We're off to a 3-1 start. So if nothing else, let's hope the uniform gods keep us in their good graces.

A quick note on methodology.

As always, I’m analyzing every NFL uniform matchup and picking a winner against the spread based on who dresses best. And just because a team’s wardrobe is ranked higher in the Power Rankings doesn’t mean that it will automatically win the uniform matchup. It’s what you wear in the instant matchup that counts.

I’ll also be crowning the best matchup of the week and shaming the worst matchup of the week. It’s the over for the sharpest matchup and the under for the dullest.

And don’t forget the Triple Mismatch Club. I’m making three units plays whenever the best dressed team in the matchup is a member of the Club (different colored helmet, jersey, and pants). And nine units plays if both members of the week’s best matchup are members.

Keep an eye out for a “NOTE” here and there where teams have not fully unveiled what they will be wearing before the writing of this issue. I’ll make my best guess as to their outfit, and it won’t affect my ability to pick a winner. I’ll also try to update after the fact if possible so each weekly issue can be a reference point for what a team wore on a given week.

Week 15 Uniform Matchups and Picks.

Steelers at Panthers was on the shortlist for best of the week. The Steelers road look is one of better Triple Mismatch Club members in the league. And I'm higher on the Panthers than most. It's nice to see the black jerseys making an appearance for the first time this season. And I'm hoping the blue jerseys are not far behind. Pittsburgh gets the nod, but I think we're in for a treat overall.

The Panthers and their playoff hopes are alive after two straight wins (and three of their last four). The Steelers long-shot playoff hopes likely ended after a letdown loss against the quarterback-depleted Ravens. But they can still play spoiler. Plus Mike Tomlin and the boys still have a shot at a non-losing season. While the Panthers have been especially impressive on the ground in recent weeks, the Steelers and their top half rushing defense will likely have something to say about it. Whatever happens, I think this one will be low scoring and close. So consider me content taking the points.

The Pick: Steelers +3 (-115)

Triple Mismatch Club 3x Play

NOTE - The Panthers have yet to unveil their choice of pants.

UPDATE - Black pants for the Panthers.

Cowboys at Jaguars. Because the Cowboys boast the most complementary uniform in football, this matchup isn't half bad. The black bodysuit of the Jaguars* is a bit uninspired, but it serves as a nice foil to the primary white outfit of the Cowboys. Dallas is the easy pick, and I'm intrigued to see this one on the screen.

Trevor Lawrence is living up to the hype as a generational first overall draft pick. He makes the difficult look easy, but he still has moments where he makes the easy look difficult. The vaunted Cowboys defense is next on his docket, and Dallas is nursing some injuries in the secondary. The Cowboys are also now without right tackle Terence Steele. But they are getting back franchise left tackle Tyron Smith. Team health aside, the Cowboys are the favorite in this one for good reason. Dallas is eighth in expected points contributed by the offense and third in expected points contributed by the defense. I'm chalking up the struggle against the Texans as an anomaly and expecting a bounce back statement this week.

*Good uniform news may be on the horizon for Jacksonville fans. The Jaguars recently sent out an email blast seeking fan input on their favorite outfits in team history. I'd put money on a redesign coming in the next year or two.

The Pick: Cowboys -4 (-110)

Triple Mismatch Club 3x Play

It looks like the Falcons and Saints got together before this game and conspired to get as much black in here as possible. An eyesore all around and the runner up for worst of the week. I'm surprised the Saints didn't find a way to get their black helmet involved as well. And I continue to be dumbfounded by their aversion to gold pants. With that being said, the black unitard Saints are still better dressed than the white-over-black Falcons.

Somehow, someway both of these teams are still alive in the NFC playoff race. The NFC South is far and away the worst division in football. The most newsworthy aspect of this one is Desmond Ridder's first career start. But I wouldn't expect him to set the world on fire. Despite having a down year, the Saints are still a top 10 pass defense. And I like them to be the driving factor in covering the number here.

The Pick: Saints -4 (-110)

It's Week 15, and - for the first time in the 2022 season - the Jets are wearing green jerseys. Unfortunately, it's happening by way of a green bodysuit. The Lions wardrobe has grown on me all season (with the exception of the gray and blue unitards). And Detroit is the clear pick.

I doubt anyone predicted Lions-Jets to be one of the best games of Week 15, but here we are. I cannot wait for this one. The electric Lions offense (fifth in expected points against the lockdown Jets defense (fourth in expected points). But the showdown that may swing this game is Zach Wilson, in his return to the New York starting job, against a resurgent Detroit defense. If Wilson is his usual self, it's hard to see the Jets taking care of business at home.

The Pick: Lions +1.5 (-110)

Chiefs-Texans is a lopsided football game and a lopsided uniform matchup. Don't need to waste too much time discussing this one. The Chiefs have one of the league's all-time classic looks, and the Texans look like a turn of the century expansion team. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, red helmets would go a long way for the Texans with this outfit. Chiefs all the way.

Speaking of Chiefs all the way, this game should be nothing short of a massacre. The Chiefs let the Broncos hang around last week, and the Texans exhausted all of their friskiness in a near upset of the Cowboys. I expect Kansas City to right the ship and Houston to settle back into the team expected to pick first in the draft.

The Pick: Chiefs -14 (-115)

NOTE - The Chiefs have yet to unveil their choice of pants.

UPDATE - Red pants confirmed for the Patriots.

I like what I'm seeing in this Eagles-Bears matchup. The Eagles always look better on the road in green pants, and the Bears home outfit is as good and classic as it gets. Chicago is the clear choice, but this one is solid all around (and a sneaky best of the week contender).

It's a surprise the spread is not more lopsided here. The Eagles are arguably the best team in football, and the Bears are arguably the worst. But if the Bears are going to have a chance in this one (or even to keep it close), it will all come down to Justin Fields and whether he can have success against the Eagles and their top 10 defense. If there is a (slight) vulnerability in the Eagles defense, it may be rushing yards allowed to opposing quarterbacks (currently allowing the 12th most in the league). And Fields leads all quarterbacks with 905 rushing yards. Never say never.

The Pick: Bears +9 (-110)

Patriots-Raiders is a middle of the road uniform matchup. Perfectly acceptable but ultimately forgettable. The Raiders in silver and black are as sharp as it gets and the easy pick here.

Bill Belichick against Josh McDaniels will get all of the pregame headlines. But I'm most interested in seeing if Josh Jacobs and Davante Adams can keep up their monster production against the Patriots and the second best defense in the league by expected points. As good as the Patriots defense has been, they can be had on the ground. And if the Raiders are going to pull out the win (and cover the number) Jacobs is going to need to keep up his 145-yards-per-game pace of the last four weeks.

The Pick: Raiders -1 (-110)

NOTE - The Patriots have yet to unveil their choice of pants.

UPDATE - Blue pants confirmed for the Patriots.

Bengals at Buccaneers was on the shortlist for best of the week until the Bucs announced they'd be wearing their dreadful pewter bodysuits. Hopefully, this will be the last season we are subjected to them knowing that the creamsicles are finally returning next season. The Bengals icy white look is among the best in the league and the safe selection here.

Burrow versus Brady. That's all that needs to be said. We need to appreciate these moments while we still have them, and this very well may be the first and only time Joe Cool and Tom Terrific face off on the gridiron. Sure, Tampa Bay has had a season to forget. But my money is still on them to win the NFC South and make the postseason. And the Bengals are arguably the best team in the AFC. So a Super Bowl showdown is still a theoretical possibility. I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the greatest of all time taking on an elite young gun that reminds me most of his greatness.

The Pick: Bengals -3.5 (-105)

Titans at Chargers. Cards on the table: this is my least favorite Chargers uniform. I'd be perfectly content if they skipped it altogether. But it's still an objectively sharp outfit. The Titans, on the other hand, continue to put out some of the worst looks in the NFL. Chargers get the nod in a no brainer.

A few weeks ago, the Titans were looking like a tough-as-nails dark horse Super Bowl contender. And the Chargers were looking like a team on the outside looking in on the playoffs. But now, the Titans are in free fall - at risk of letting the AFC South slip through their fingers. And the Chargers are ascendant - in play to be the team no one wants to face in January. This very well may be a wild card matchup in a month. But for now, it's a key game in postseason positioning. The Titans defense has been a shell of itself navigating a litany of injuries. And Justin Herbert has been reminding everyone that he is one of best quarterbacks in the game. Consider me content to ride with the wunderkind quarterback.

The Pick: Chargers -3 (-105)

Giants at Commanders on Sunday Night Football is a showdown of monochrome outfits. The Giants in all white, and the Commanders in all burgundy. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, gray pants would go a long way for the Giants. Meanwhile, the Commanders can do no right in the uniform department. Yellow pants (preferably with a stripe of some kind) would be far more palatable than burgundy practice pants. Giants get the nod but can't say I'm lookin forward to seeing this one on the screen.

While the uniform matchup leaves much to be desired, Giants-Commanders is one of the no-doubt games of the day. Only two weeks ago, these teams tied. So the winner* of this one will claim the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Giants 7-2 start and the Commanders 1-4 start both feel worlds away. New York has turned back into a pumpkin while Washington is 6-1-1 in their last eight games. The loser of this one will be in a precarious playoff position, but the winner will be all but guaranteed to have an NFC wild card spot. In a divisional battle that last ended all square, I'm happy with the points.

*After typing this, I fully expect another tie.

The Pick: Giants +4.5 (-105)

Worst NFL Uniform Matchup of Week 15.

Cardinals at Broncos. The battle of the panelists. Two dated looks in serious need of a redesign. Not much more to say about it than that. On the bright side, I'm hopeful that both Arizona and Denver will be rocking new uniforms within the next two years.

In addition to being the first uniform matchup of the week, this is also the worst overall football game. Colt McCoy versus Brett Rypien. A quarterback showdown built for the under. The total is awfully low, but these offenses are awfully inept. Add in the elite defensive ability of the Broncos and the home field advantage at Mile High, and it'll be interesting to see if the Cardinals can get into the endzone at all. The line could be at 30.5, and I'd still feel bullish.

The Pick: Under 36.5 (-110)

NOTE - The Cardinals have yet to unveil their choice of pants.

UPDATE - Red pants confirmed for the Cardinals.

Best NFL Uniform Matchup of Week 15.

Rams at Packers is a fantastic uniform matchup.* Monday Night Football at Lambeau Field makes it that much sweeter. The Rams white jersey outfits are the best in their wardrobe. And the Packers home greens are an excellent complement. Doesn't get much better than this on the frozen tundra.

The Rams are riding high after the Baker Mayfield Miracle, the clear highlight for both the Rams and Mayfield in an otherwise forgettable season. The Packers are 5-8 and clinging to the longest of shots at a playoff spot (one more loss and it's all over). Both Los Angeles and Green Bay are in the bottom 10 of points scored this season, so any over is a tall order. But 40 points is imminently doable for playing-with-house-money Baker Mayfield and always-dangerous Aaron Rodgers.

*I even liked it when the Rams wore gray over blue at Lambeau in the 2020 Divisional Round.

The Pick: Over 39.5 (-110)

Triple Mismatch Club 3x Play IF the Rams wear yellow pants.

NOTE - The Rams have yet to unveil their choice of pants. Blue offers a sharper contrast, but the team posted a graphic with yellow pants (doesn't necessarily mean that's the choice). In a relatively down uniform week, it's the best regardless.

UPDATE - Blue pants for the Rams. Hallelujah!
