Bets Dressed - Week 15 - Saturday Special Edition

Happy NFL Saturday. Three games and six playoff contenders. In the words of Frank the Tank, actually a pretty nice little Saturday.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Saturday Bowls!

A quick note on methodology.

As always, I’m analyzing every NFL uniform matchup and picking a winner against the spread based on who dresses best. And just because a team is ranked higher in the Uniform Wardrobe Power Rankings doesn’t mean it will automatically win the uniform matchup. It’s what you wear in the instant matchup that counts.

Week 15 Saturday Uniform Matchups and Picks.

Vikings at Bengals isn’t going to be competing for best of the week with Minnesota’s flaws and Cincy rocking the black unitard. But the color scheme combination is undeniably sharp. While this is far from my favorite Bengals outfit, Cincinnati still gets the nod.

The Passtronaut Era appears to be over in Minnesota. With Josh Dobbs relegated to third string, Nick Mullens gets the tap on the shoulder for Week 15. And he has a Bengals defense that is Top 10 in knockdown percentage to look forward to. But the story in Cincinnati is not the defense. It’s Bizurrow himself: Jake Browning. Since taking over as QB1, Browning is 2-1 and has led the Bengals to 34 points in two straight wins. I’m not saying I expect Browning to lead the Bengals to the promised land, but I like him to take care of the Vikings at home.

The Pick: Bengals -3

NOTE - The Vikings have yet to reveal their choice of pants.

For the second year in a row, the Colts are breaking out their throwbacks at home against the Steelers. While this is another sharp color combo game, these bizarre Colts throwbacks just don’t do it for me, and it all comes down to logo placement. As I said last year, the placement of the horseshoe logos is jarring and reminds me of the Microsoft Windows screen snap feature. I understand wanting to get in on the throwback fun, but blasts from the past can be downgrades* (especially when your primary home uniform is flawless). The Triple Mismatch Club Steelers run away with it.

After a 7-4 start, the Steelers have dropped two in a row at home to the Cardinals and Patriots (with a combined record of 6-20). Meanwhile, Indy’s four game winning streak came to an abrupt end after getting trounced in Cincinnati. This one feels like a true toss-up. If Mike Tomlin and the veteran leadership in Pittsburgh can get the mutineers back in line, I like the Steelers to take this one outright.

*Just because it’s a throwback doesn’t mean it’s good.

The Pick: Steelers +1.5

Broncos at Lions in another solid color combo game that doesn’t quite live up to its uniform matchup potential.* The Broncos are still stuck in the Panelist Era. And the Honolulu blueberries would look much better with silver pants. I’m declaring this one a tie, and tie goes to the Lions - the higher ranked team in the Uniform Wardrobe Power Rankings.

The Broncos keep inching toward the playoffs. And the Lions haven’t looked the same since getting shellacked by the Ravens in Week 7. But Detroit is nothing if not resilient. Coming off a loss this season, the Lions are 3-0 with an average margin of victory of 10 points. I expect that trend to hold for the Fightin’ Dan Campbells.

*Sensing a theme?

The Pick: Lions -4

The Week 15 full slate breakdown will drop tomorrow morning. Because we live in a world without an NFL uniform scheduling czar, we’re at the mercy of the teams deciding and announcing their uniform combos each week. Where it’s not 100% clear before posting, I’ll make a best guess and update after the fact for posterity.
