Bets Dressed - Week 13 - Thursday Night Football Uniform Matchup and Fantasy Plays

Week 13. No time to be superstitious because the uniform gods have blessed us with an absolute doozy of a uniform slate this week. There are five legitimate contenders for best of the week, including tonight's showdown.

I was holding out hope for a throwback vs. throwback Thursday Night Football spectacular. The Patriots held up their end of the bargain. But the Bills failed to deliver. Ladies and gentlemen, the Almost Throwback Bowl!

A quick note on methodology.

As always, I’m analyzing every NFL uniform matchup and picking a winner against the spread based on who dresses best. And just because a team’s wardrobe is ranked higher in the Power Rankings doesn’t mean that it will automatically win the uniform matchup. It’s what you wear in the instant matchup that counts.

And don’t forget the Triple Mismatch Club wrinkle. I’m making three unit plays whenever the best dressed team in the matchup is a member of the Club (different colored helmet, jersey, and pants). And nine unit plays if both members of the week’s best matchup are members.

Week 12 Recap.

Before we dive into Thursday Night Football and Week 13 Fantasy Plays, let’s revisit Week 12:

6-10. Thanksgiving was ugly. And the early window wasn't much better. The Raiders, Niners, and Steelers saved us from a truly cataclysmic week. The Week 13 uniform slate is nothing short of divine. Let's hope the uniform gods bring us back to the promised land. Helps that we're starting with a beaut.

Thursday Night Football Uniform Matchup.

It's hard to find a false note in either of these outfits. The Bills icy white ensemble is one of the best in the league. And the Patriots red throwback uniform is as aesthetically pleasing as it gets. I do wish the Bills wore their own throwbacks* solely for the fun of it.** The only minor criticism of this matchup is that the color palettes are a bit redundant. But high marks all around. It's hard to imagine the Patriots ever not being the pick when dressed like this, and they get the nod here.

The last time these teams met, the Bills completed a perfect offensive game (scored touchdowns on every single possession other than the game-ending kneel down) en route to a 47-17 wild card playoff victory. Something tells me that Bill Belichick has mentioned that fact to the Patriots a few times this week. The man does not take double digit losses lightly. As coach of the Patriots and including postseason games, Belichick is an absurd 31-6 straight up against teams that beat him by double digits in the previous meeting. Bonus obscure gambling stat: the Bills are 0-3-1 against the spread this season as a road favorite of three or more points.

*If I were in charge, tonight would've featured both teams in throwbacks. Amazon and the NFL could've then used this game to market next season's Thursday Night Football agenda: Throwback Thursday. A season's worth of throwback-on-throwback aesthetic and football goodness. You're welcome. As always, this doesn't have to be hard.

**For the record, I believe this icy white outfit is better than the throwback uniform. The current logo is especially an improvement.

The Pick: Patriots +4 (-110)

Club SDR - Week 13 Fantasy Plays.

Batted .333 on our Thanksgiving Thursday Anytime TD Extravaganza. Came out about even in winnings but 2-4 overall. 18-19 on the season. Looking to get back above .500 and calling on some No. 1s to get us there.

Jalen Hurts - Over 273.5 Total Yards (-115)

It's hard to believe this is the first appearance for Jalen Hurts in our Single Digit Revolution segment. He's a no-doubt First-Team Club SDR member and on the shortlist for MVP and OPOY. Hurts is averaging 287 total yards per game. And he draws the Titans this week, who have given up the 6th most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks this season (including 302 total yards per game). I like his chances to clear the number.

Marcus Mariota - Over 207.5 Total Yards (-115)

Marcus Mariota came through for us earlier this season, and he has an ideal matchup against the Steelers and their quarterback-friendly defense. Don't believe me? Pittsburgh is giving up two passing touchdowns per game, the third most passing yards per game, and the seventh most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks. And most importantly, the Steelers are giving up 291 total yards per game to the enemy signal caller. Go get yours, Marcus.

Ja'Marr Chase - Over 73.5 Receiving Yards (-115)

He's baaaack. Before getting injured and missing four games, Ja'Marr was on pace for 114 receptions, 1,469 yards, and 15 touchdowns (all greater than his numbers from last season's OROY campaign). In the two games immediately preceding the injury, he averaged 7.5 receptions, 131 yards, and 2 touchdowns. And in his two games against the Chiefs last season, he averaged 8.5 grabs, 160 yards, and 2 touchdowns. I know it's his first game back. But the man is an alien. And I expect him to live up to his monster reputation.

NOTE - Still waiting on Chiefs-Bengals stat props to drop. Will update with the specific Ja'Marr pick.

UPDATE - The pick is in.

Coming Attractions.

Bets Dressed Week 13 coverage continues this Sunday with a breakdown of the full slate (plus Monday Night Football).

Look for the Sunday issue to hit your inbox prior to the early window kickoff. As I’ve noted previously, we live in a world without a uniform scheduling czar, so it’s sometimes a chore finding out a team’s wardrobe ahead of time. In instances where it’s not 100% clear, I’ll make a best guess and update the issue later.
